Studying at MTC

Usually students come to MTC for Year 11 and Year 12 to complete their secondary schooling, and  this is what most of them do.

Year 11
In the first year, students will do the majority  of their Year 11 and 12 schooling in one year and get that out of the way. That gives them their SACE qualifications. Then they move into their technical education.

In Year 11, students will be doing a lot of work to get ahead in their South Australian Certification in Education (SACE) but they won’t be studying the same old subjects as everyone else in other schools.

They’ll be doing real-world subjects, for example; applying science while looking at engines, or English by applying it in the workplace rather than Shakespeare or  maths; by applying it to resistance in electrical circuits. They’ll be applying their knowledge immediately, rather than wondering what relevance it has.

They’ll also look at different trades through the Try-a-Trade program. To build up their work experience, they’ll be doing placements at different workplaces.

Year 12
In Year 12, we hardly see students – but not because they’re skipping school! In year 12 students are out working four days a week at their workplace where they have an apprenticeship and back at the College one day a week. So they’re working 1/4 of an apprenticeship while still finishing school.

They come back for blocks of time at school to finish key projects to make sure they have achieved their SACE, but as you can see, it’s a very different environment to a ‘traditional’ school.
